The village of Manapad has a rich history as well. It has three magnificent churches. St. Francis Xavier came In 1542, for a visit. The Holy Cross Church, which stands on a cliff, is the place from where he started his missionary teachings and activities.

Legends say that the cross inside the church was initially made by the remains of a splintered mast of a ship.

In 1540, a ship encountered a grave storm on its way to the east while sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. The Captain of the ship prayed that if he and his crew emerge alive from the storm, he would make a cross from the mast of the ship.

Manapad was the shore where they landed after the storm. And the Captain established the mast as a cross in the Holy Cross Church. Needless to say, the Holy Cross Church attracts thousands of devotees from all over the world throughout the year to this small village.
